Quotes

Florence Nightingale
Women never have a half-hour in all their lives (excepting before or after anybody is up in the house) that they can call their own, without fear of offending or of hurting someone. Why do people sit up so late, or, more rarely, get up so early? Not because the day is not long enough, but because they have 'no time in the day to themselves."

Jane Goodall
"It is sad to have to put a monetary value on the wilderness and on animal species. But until the wealthy nations can agree to pay an annual `rent' on huge areas of land, it seems likely that governments in the developing world will exploit their natural resources in any way they can...."

Stephen Hawking

Week 3-Materials in artists' artworks

"The Young Family", 2002-2003 by Patricia Piccinini

This artwork is made by silicone, polyurethane leather, and human hair. The reason why Patricia Piccinini uses these materials is that these materials could simulate human skin and hair to le the artwork look alive. These materials could well represent the tarnished skin with wrinkles, red blotches and the facial expression of the Young Family. The Young Family is probably made mostly by hand therefore we can see how difficult it is to made it so real.

by Ricky Swallow

The “Killing Time” is a life-sized carving of a seafood-laden dining table. This material is made of wood. Due to the fact that the subject of the artwork is killing and death, wood might be a good material to represent a dead thing. This artwork is done by sculpting. The sculpture is very exquisite because the shape of the objects is so smooth, the scales on the fish is also very clear. They indicates how good thesculpting skill of the artist is.

week3-sketchup model

Developed model

This model is mainly constructed by transparent material. This is to improve the usage of sunlight and give people an impression that the inner space is larger than what it actually is. You may see that there are many different textures applied into this model but I was trying not to use too many colours which would made people feel uncomfortable. Moreover, I have put the artworks of the three artists and other pictures to make it look as a real art gallery.
